Kai-awase is an ancient Japanese memory game known since the Heian era (9th–12th centuries). Players match pairs of shells with the same images: flowers, birds, scenes from literature. The goal is to find all the pairs by turning over the shells two at a time, training observation and memorization. This forerunner of modern memory games was popular at the court of aristocrats.
