Artyom is twenty-four, he works in support, and for the last three years everything has been falling out of his hands. The keys fall through the bars, and the elevator gets up on the very evening when he is late. And then the yard disappears. Artyom finds himself inside an ancient mechanism, which is called a Clock here. For four hundred years, he has been making the life of this world a little better: crops are stronger, bridges are more reliable, and people die less often in hospitals. Someone pays for it. The mechanism needs a living person from another world, and it has long chosen who will become one. Eight chapters, about half an hour. Nearby there is a guide, a researcher, an archivist and a general. Relationships are not shown by scales and numbers: they can only be judged by the way they talk to Artyom.
